In the past, every web developer has had to worry about the site they built being found by search engines. We all know that the majority of us use Google to find the sites we want and now they have made the job of the web developer far more easy by stating that they NEVER consider meta keywords in the algorithm that determines the search results you get and for your site's ranking.
What Google relies on instead the meta "description" of your site and "page content". View the video below.
What is the difference between "keywords" and "Description"?
Let's say you are a contractor and you hire us us to build your site. We used to add 2 things to every page, article and the main shell of your project.
The first this is the meta description. This is a simple sentence that describes the content of your site or the article being displayed on a link within your site. For instance, the meta description for the overall site might be, "Construction Company services the greater metro area in all residential construction". Yes, that is a poorly executed meta description, but it has to be that generalized for the sake of this example.
The other thing we added was meta keywords. This is a list of single words or 2-3 word specific phrases separated by commas. Sounds simple, right? Not really. These words needed to be researched, we would have to look at your competitors sites, spend time Googling common queries about your specific business to see what hits, make lists, refine lists, etc... and this had to be done for every page on your site with relative content. It is a hugely time consuming task. Even in our general example of being a contractor, look at what I come up with off the top of my head.
It can get ridiculous and that list was not even researched nor complete.
Yes, there are other search engines out there. But you have to realize that almost every search engine uses Google to power their own search results. Even Bing and Yahoo both eliminated using keywords in the ranking systems before Google.
What does this mean for Joomla Crafters' customers? It means that if you ask us for SEO work that it will be cheaper and faster!
